Free Speech

The freedom to speak without punishment from the government is a critical and foundational right that protects all other rights. Punishment or penalty for the exercising of that right, such as arrest or expulsion, are a violation of the right that should be protested and fought against by all people.

The punishment of someone exercising their right to free speech a threat to the right to free speech for any and all persons.

Civil stewards are defenders of free speech.

What You Can Do

Do not ignore government punishment of someone based on their speech simply because you don’t agree with what their speech is. Precedent matters and free speech encroachment by the government cannot go unchallenged.

Use your right to speech to participate in holding elected representatives accountable and to push for the actions you want to see them take.

Ensure you understand your rights around free speech and how it extends beyond just speaking and publishing words.

Public Forum

Our civic life has a multitude of opportunity for speech in a public forum including council and board meetings, town halls, public meetings and open comment periods. Our rights to exercise speech in these spaces is a critical freedom.

Consumption of Content

The right to free speech inherently requires the right to consume such speech. As the government is prohibited from suppressing or requiring adherence to particular ideas or messages it also cannot punish people for the consumption of legally protected speech.

Publishing

The freedom to publish speech is part of our freedom of speech. Content that can be published under the protection of the First Amendment can consist of most any material with the exclusion of a narrow category of materials that are considered unprotected speech.
