Civil Stewardship

Civil (adjective):

1) Things related to or involving the public, their activities, needs, or ways, or civic affairs

2) a manner of courtesy and politeness

Steward (noun):

A person who looks after others and other’s belongings

Stewardship is the act of taking care of that which has been entrusted to us,

for the good of everyone here now and those will come after us.

The Party is Over

We’ve taken for granted that our institutions would always answer to us.

That our political parties would respond to the needs of the people rather than the desires of the wealthy.

Our political parties have disappointed us. All of them.

We need better parties and a better system and the path to that starts with more engaged, informed, active and effective members of our communities.

We must be inspired by our possible future, not driven by fearful ideology

We must be wiser because our history, not blind to its faults

We must be generous, not consumed by manufactured scarcity

We must participate, and not wait for others to do what should be done

We must actively work for the good of everyone here now and those who will come after us.

The most American thing we can do

is take care of each other

If we want a better world, we have to make it ourselves.

Tempered by compassion

Informed by facts, science and reason

Grounded in the realities of difficult choices

Respectful of our differences

Supported by collective care for one another

Inspired by what is possible when we work together

Accepting of our different identities, priorities and needs

Civil Servants

The people employed by our governments to carry out the various services and functions that keep our communities, states and country running.

Civil Representatives

The people we elect to enact policies and legislation that reflects the will of the voters at the local, state and national level.

Civil Stewards

This is us. This is who we need to be.

Attentive to the wellbeing of our communities, informed about what’s happening around us, and engaged in the processes available to us to make our world a better place.

To be a civil steward is to work for the good of all by participating in one’s community, civic processes and advocacy for the same rights, freedoms and success of others we seek for ourselves and to use the civic tools of our democracy to build a free society that protects the rights of all people; makes sound decisions based on fact, data and science; and pursues the collective good of all no matter what different identities and abilities we might have.

Civil stewards take care of one another, our communities, our country and our planet.
